I created these three models to apply for a vacancy I had found at the website of Jagex where applicants were required to complete this test.

The rigging and putting into live action of the troll (below) wasn’t part of the test and I did it only to practice a little more with rigging and animating for the Blender Game Engine.

The bookshelf and the troll models were created from the concepts provided by Jagex. For the melee weapon I had to come up with something of my own.

The limitations were 250 tris for the weapon, 500 tris for the bookshelf and 1000 tris for the troll. Also, max texture size was 128 x 128.
My models ended up having 244 tris for the melee weapon, 440 tris for the bookshelf and 982 tris for the troll. Note that the bookshelf didn’t need to have faces pointing down, so I deleted them.

All models were created with Wings3D, unwrapping was done with Blender. I then proceeded to 3D-paint the troll and the weapon from inside Blender. Gimp was used for minor adjustments to the textures and to create the texture for the bookshelf.

Black Bird Blender Game Character in Action

This Black Bird is a game character I did to get up and running with games creation with Blender. It’s very low poly, has a texture with transparency, a simple rig, a flight-cycle animation and poses for left, right, up and down. These are the directions it can be told to go using the arrow keys on the keyboard. The camera is set up to follow the bird and will automatically be used in a level scene where the bird has been linked into. As usual I used Wings3D for modeling, and also as usual I got to hate Gimp even more, with every use. I wonder if I should start a group in Facebook…
Thanks go to Gabriela who was kind enough to provide the colour texture and to Dave Ward for his fantastic tutorials.

This animation started out as a test to construct a building using the hair particle system with only a few low poly construction models. The result was achieved very quickly and I then had the idea of letting a rescue craft fly by and scan for survivors.

Animation in Blender 2.5 Alpha 0 was straight forward with nice features and some bugs as is to be expected from an alpha release.

I also made extensive use of the node compositor to achieve the final visual style.

Rendering speed was pretty decent with about 1m 18s per frame on a borrowed MacBook pro.

Images 01, 03 and 04: I did all models in nice quads, and also mapping, texturing, shading, lighting and rigging. The animation shows the rig in action.

Image 02: I mapped, textured, shaded and lighted the scene.

The client wanted the black background and I didn’t have an HDRI to lighten the scene. Consedering this I think I managed fine. The shadows could be better though…

These two scenes are part of an educational movie about protection against x-rays in the dental practice by Inowa Peter Zeller Multi-Media + AV-Technik.

The following is a demonstration of the rig:
